Hindi-Urdu or Hindustani, a single language or two different languages?
Urdu and Hindi are so close that most linguists claim that they are a single language, a pluricentric language: Hindi-Urdu, also known as Hindustani, Hindavi, or Rekhta, with two official forms – Standard Hindi and Standard Urdu, written using different scripts.
Hindi-Urdu, the lingua franca of North India and Pakistan, is the native language of around 570 million speakers, and the second language of more than 490 million people.
Hindi and Urdu are two of the 22 official languages of India, regulated by the Central Hindi Directorate and the National Council for Promotion of the Urdu language. Standard Hindi, understood by more than 30% of the country’s population, is widely used as the primary language in India. Urdu and English are the two official languages of Pakistan. Urdu is regulated by the National Language Authority in Pakistan.
Hindi and Urdu, virtually the same language with different writing systems
The two main differences between the two official forms of Hindustani or Hindi-Urdu have to do with their writing system and vocabulary. Hindi is written from left to right using the Devanagari script of Sanskrit, and Urdu from right to left in the Perso-Arabic script. Both Hindi and Urdu share a common lexicon, but Hindi includes more words from Sanskrit origin, and Urdu has stronger Persian, Central Asian, and Arabic influences.
Although Hindi and Urdu languages are very similar orally and colloquially, differences arise in literary, academic and technical fields. Thus, when searching for an Hindi-Urdu translation services company, make sure that the Urdu and Hindi translators assigned to the translation of your technical documents are experienced technical translators translating into their mother tongue (Hindi or Urdu from India or Pakistan) with documented subject matter expertise in the technical area your documents deal with.
